Digital Photography Weekend Workshop
Upper Canada Village is an award-winning outdoor living history museum that attracts thousands of tourists and history buffs each year who indulge in the experience of being transported back in time. But it also has appeal for other reasons. Over the years, numerous artists, photographers and other creative-minded individuals have been drawn to the site for its picturesque and authentic qualities, capturing the essence of the historic surroundings for their own enjoyment. This year, Upper Canada Village will become the backdrop for three new Fall Workshops that cater to enthusiasts in these creative fields.
The first of these workshops, PHOTOGRAPHING UPPER CANADA VILLAGE WITH OUR DIGITAL CAMERAS, will be held from Friday, August 31 at 7:00 p.m. until Sunday, September 2 at 3:30 p.m.
In this weekend course participants will bring their own digital camera and memory card. They will begin by learning how to operate it more effectively. With this new found knowledge and practice, participants will each make a photo essay of Upper Canada Village, learning simple techniques in taking effective portraits of people in the outdoors, how to enhance a landscape image, and how to add emotion to pictures, all the while getting the most out of the tools at hand. This course will appeal to beginners and possibly intermediate users of digital cameras.
The course instructor will be photographer Rob Stimpson, from Lake of Bays near Algonquin Park. While Rob’s mainstream occupation is that of professional photographer, his education, creative talents and past experience suggest additional descriptions: graphic artist, writer, teacher, and wilderness guide. Currently he runs his own business, Rob Stimpson Photography, specializing in environmental and outdoor lifestyle images.
Rob’s career in the creative and outdoor world spans many years. His first success came from selling images to Canada’s prestigious National Film Board of Canada and from there his passion for travel, art and photography has taken him to many spectacular places on the planet. From paddling Arctic rivers, to chasing penguins in the Antarctic, trekking in Africa to numerous other outdoor adventures, his focus is capturing the magnificence of the natural world with his camera.
Participants in the Upper Canada Village Photography workshop will stay at the Guest House, located just outside of Village. The Guest House provides a picturesque home-like setting on the banks of the St. Lawrence River, and can sleep up to eight people (two bedrooms with two beds in each, plus one larger bedroom with four beds).
The cost for the course is $350 per person, and includes accommodation on Friday and Saturday nights, a Friday evening wine & cheese ice-breaker, two breakfasts, two lunches and a Saturday evening meal.
The Photography Workshop is the first of a series of three courses being offered by Upper Canada Village, which also includes “THE ART OF WATERCOLOUR WEEKEND” (October 12 to 14, 2007) and the ‘QUILTING AND RUGMAKING WEEKEND” (October 19 to 21, 2007).
