Scottish Country Wedding Re-enactment at Upper Canada Village July 22
This coming Sunday, July 22nd at Upper Canada Village will be a day to remember, as an 1860s Scottish Country Wedding re-enactment unfolds for all to see. Each year Upper Canada Village stages a different “19th Century Wedding” with a unique cast of characters from the past, and the event continues to be one of the site’s most well-attended days of the season.
The Village’s attention to detail in recreating “the big day” may be one of the reasons for the event’s popularity each season. This year’s wedding will portray the union of two ordinary working class people. The fictitious character Jenny Ross is an orphan, raised and cared for by her Ross aunts, three spinster ladies who live in the Ross farm house. The three aunts, as well as several other Ross cousins, will be present at the wedding. It is hoped that Mr. John Ross, local Member of Parliament for Dundas County, and distant cousin of the Ross family, will be able to attend.
The character Mr. Christopher Lindsay is a young farmer from the Morrisburg area who will be accompanied by his best friend and groomsman, Mr. Albert Renaud, his parents and other members of the Lindsay clan. Miss Ross will be accompanied by her maid of honour, Miss Martina Bols.
The wedding ceremony will be at Christ Church at 1:30 p.m., after the bride and groom arrive together in a horse and carriage. Following the church service, the couple will lead the guests walking back to the Ross farm house and yard where there will be Scottish toasts and a wedding reception for all guests and visitors in the Ross farm yard. In Ross barn, Village musicians will play for some Scottish country dancing as the bride and groom lead off the Cumberland Reel. Finger foods and refreshments will be served to visitors in the Ross farm yard, while a simple wedding cake suited for the occasion will be on display inside the Ross home.
Note: Visitors are able to attend the 19th Century Wedding as part of their regular admission to Upper Canada Village.
