Workshop, Tours & Plant Sale at Fall Gardens Day ~ Saturday, September 8
Upper Canada Village will be hosting the last of its garden series with “Fall Gardens Day” on Saturday, September 8. This year, visitors to the site will be able to enjoy and learn about the Village gardens at harvest time and the various trees on site, through two guided walking tours. They’ll also find out about historical and modern approaches to pest control in an afternoon workshop. A small perennial and tree sale throughout the morning will complement the day’s activities ...
Starting at the front entrance, visitors will be invited to join Garden Tours led by a Village horticultural interpreter through a selection of the gardens on site (tours commence at 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.). The morning tour will focus on “The Trees of Upper Canada Village and Eastern Ontario”, and will explore the natural and “introduced” landscapes of the 19th century, as well as the key characteristics and uses of trees on site. Techniques and hints for proper tree identification will be part of this tour. The afternoon tour will focus on late-blooming ornamentals and heirloom vegetables, harvesting techniques, and preparing gardens and yards for winter.
An Afternoon Workshop “What’s Eating You?” will take place at Loucks Farm at 1:00 p.m. In this workshop, visitors will learn about a range of historical and modern deterrents and repellents for insect and animal pests. Pest identification, types of damage, and various techniques for pest control will be discussed. Complimentary “door prizes” will be awarded to workshop participants.
From 9:30 a.m. until 12:00 noon, a selection of perennials and small trees will be available for sale in front of the Village Store. Horticultural staff will be on hand to answer questions about these 19th century species. All plants will be $5.00 each (taxes included).
All workshops, tours and other activities offered during the Fall Gardens event are included in the regular admission to Upper Canada Village for the day. (And for seniors, admission is only half-price, as part of a month-long “Seniors Half-Price Admission” promotion being offered at Upper Canada Village for the entire month of September.)
More fall festivities are in store at Upper Canada Village: the Fall Fair on Saturday and Sunday, September 15 and 16; the Quilt Show on Saturday and Sunday, September 22 and 23; and Fall on the Farm from September 29 to October 5.
