QUEEN VICTORIA BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS Featuring the Upper Canada Artisan Marketplace Saturday, May 22 to Monday, May 24
Join in as our 1860s Village celebrates Queen Victoria's birthday! Sing "God Save the Queen", hear historical patriotic speeches, see grand military manoeuvres of the Brockville Infantry Company, hear the Fort Henry Sergeant leading the militia muster, and lace up for some 1860s athletic games including three-legged races, sack runs and more. Cheer along during the Village's hand-pumped fire engine trials. You may even be invited to join a team and try your hand at pumping this amazing machine. Be sure to get your piece of birthday cake!
HEIRLOOM PLANTS AND GARDENS WEEKEND Saturday, May 29, to Sunday, May 30 Nurture a piece of our history! Heirloom varieties of perennials and annuals lovingly grown within Upper Canada Village and in the Queen Elizabeth Gardens will be for sale. Experienced horticultural staff will be present to answer gardening and pest control questions. Related gardening books and merchandise will be available, a perfect way to start your spring gardening plans! NEW! FANTASTIC FIBRES AND FABRICS WEEKEND Friday, June 4 to Sunday, June 6 Celebrate and learn about the fibres and fabrics that make your fashions. This new event includes discussions of rare breeds of sheep, hands-on sheep shearing, spinning and weaving demonstrations, special guests, and our one-of-a-kind Woollen Mill demonstrations. This year's event promises to be bigger and better with the participation of artisans involved with lace making and other fibre arts and crafts from within the region. MEDIEVAL FESTIVAL 3rd Annual - Bigger and Better Than Ever! Friday, June 11 to Sunday, June 13 A colourful cast of medieval re-enactors, musicians, buskers, artisans, falconers, archers, merchants and jousting Knights in shining armour on horseback will return to Upper Canada Village for this event's third - and even bigger - year! Travel back in time within an encampment of tents, mini-stages, natural arenas and livestock quarters, plus a new "weapons of war" competition, children's games and activities, and a medieval marketplace. Visitors are encouraged to come dressed in medieval attire. BEST OF ALL, the Medieval Festival is free with regular admission to Upper Canada Village --- that's two historic attractions for the price of one! Take part in the excitement of authentically re-created 19th century weddings! Join in the ceremony and all the special festivities that make each wedding unique. Marvel at the procession of horse-drawn carriages and at the beautifully attired Villagers as they make their way to the church, home or garden ceremony. Be sure to get your piece of wedding cake!
NEW: UPPER CANADA HERITAGE FESTIVAL Thursday, July 1 to Sunday July 11 Celebrate the 19th century. Live the 1860s with entertaining and insightful glimpses into the keystone events of social, political and military life! Immerse yourself in Village life circa 1860 during this 11 day festival featuring colourful and participatory re-enactments of a christening, wedding, funeral and even a provincial election, where visitors can vote for their favourite historical candidate. An exclusive visit from our soon-to-be Prime Minister John A. Macdonald will shed some light on the looming Confederation of Canada. Engaging talks and activities throughout the festival will allow visitors to experience the etiquette, fashion, table manners, personal hygiene, and leisure activities of the time. The festival will culminate in a Military Weekend event hosted by the Friends of Crysler's Farm Battlefield. FAMILY ACTIVITY CENTRE OPEN 19th Century Games - Live the Life of a Child! Daily Thursday, July 1 to Monday, September 6 Jump into 19th century dress-up clothing, participate in games, play with toys of a by-gone era and have some old-fashioned fun at the Village's Family Activity Centre -- open daily throughout the summer. Try your hand at carding wool, write with a quill pen, play a game of skittles, show your artistry with a historically themed craft and lots more. Friendly staff will be on hand to provide instruction to visitors. TRAVELLING TILTONS Afternoons Thursday, July 1 to Monday, September 6 Marvel as the Travelling Tiltons Minstrel Troupe rolls into the Village on a horse-drawn wagon, shamelessly promoting themselves with a sampling of their colourful acts, including stand-up comedy, singing and lively instrumental music. You may even get your big break and be called up to their 19th century stage! NEW! 19TH CENTURY CULINARY AND GARDENS WEEKEND Friday, July 23 to Sunday, July 25 Savour the tastes, aromas, scents and nature's bounty of the 1860s! This new festival will let you explore two closely related subjects within the Village's beautiful grounds, gardens and kitchens, including taste testing, cooking demonstrations, garden tours and themed discussions related to organic gardening and the 100-mile diet. THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR RE-ENACTMENT EVENT Saturday, August 7 to Sunday, August 8 Why did 50,000 Canadians join the American Civil War in the 1860s? Learn, explore and participate as re-enactors take you back to this historic event that impacted Canada in untold ways. Special guests, talks and discussions about the role of Canadians in this war and the impact of the war on pre-confederation Canada will help illustrate our involvement. A visitor encampment will add to the excitement. ANTIQUE CAR SHOW Sunday, August 15 Co-hosted with the Cornwall Olde Car Club, this is your chance to see a wide variety of antique and classic cars exhibited in front of Upper Canada Village. Inside the gates, visit the Transportation Museum and see the many historical vehicles used on site. (Regular admission applies for activities inside the Village.) NEW! HORSE LOVERS WEEKEND Friday, August 27 to Sunday, August 29 What could be better than a long weekend that celebrates the importance and beauty of the horse? This three-day equine event will include demonstrations and talks about horse grooming, trimming & shoeing, horse-driving, horse care & nutrition, and training young horses, and registration. Included will be a celebration of our very own breed, the Canadian Horse … be sure to hop on board our horse-drawn carry-all for a tour around town, or book a private carriage ride! A variety of partners will be helping to host this new event. DOORS OPEN CORNWALL, STORMONT, DUNDAS & GLENGARRY Saturday, September 11 to Sunday, September 12 Explore Canada's hidden treasures in this annual Doors Open Ontario event celebrating buildings with heritage value. Visit the original Aultsville Train Station, an attractive 19th century wooden station, originally located in the Lost Village of Aultsville and used by the Grand Trunk Railway Company. Beside the station is an early locomotive, passenger coach and baggage and refrigeration car on one of the few remaining sections of the original Grand Trunk rail bed. Take a few moments to explore the Loyalist, War of 1812 and other historical monuments and sculptures in adjacent Crysler Heritage Park. All are located next door to Upper Canada Village. FALL FAIR Featuring the Eastern Ontario Guild's Annual Quilt Show Friday, September 17 to Sunday, September 19 Participate in the excitement of a wonderfully re-created 1860s FALL FAIR, using authentic 1860s fair categories and rules as a guideline. Public entries are encouraged! Explore the fairgrounds and discover heritage livestock, agricultural and dairy products, vegetables, flowers, and fine arts. Join in the many games and old fashioned variety of entertainment for the entire family. (Exhibition tent open for viewing beginning Friday, September 17.) On Saturday and Sunday, see the beauty and artistry of over 50 contemporary quilts on display at a special QUILT SHOW hosted by quilting guilds from across Eastern Ontario. See a unique collection of 19th century quilts, engage with quilt merchants, visit an 1860s quilting bee and hear special Quilt Talks. NEW! WOOD LOVERS WEEKEND Thanksgiving Weekend - Friday, October 8 to Sunday, October 10 Thank goodness for wood in all its glory! Come celebrate wood, explore its properties, uses and beauty. 19th century tool displays, muley saw, pit-sawing and timber-framing demonstrations, special farm and cabinet-making projects, and a variety of guest wood workers (e.g., chair-makers, canoe-builders, lacrosse and snow-shoe makers) will all be part of this hands-on celebration. Pick up some harvest treats or enjoy a traditional Thanksgiving dinner at Willard's Hotel in the heart of the Village.
10th Annual ALIGHT AT NIGHT FESTIVALEastern Ontario's Biggest Outdoor Light Festival Home of the 2nd Annual Canadian Gingerbread House Championships Coming in December of 2010 Stroll around the streets and be amazed at the picturesque Village ablaze and literally "Alight at Night" with over a QUARTER MILLION lights! See the new and spectacular Crysler Hall Sound & Light Show as thousands of lights dance to your favourite holiday tunes on the façade and grounds of this historic mansion. Marvel at the phenomenal creations in our Canadian Gingerbread House contest - enter your own creation! Visit the Village's own life-size Gingerbread House and grab an enticing treat! Night-time horse-drawn wagon rides provide old-fashioned tours around the site, and a brilliantly lit BRAND NEW Toy Train will be offering round trips through Crysler Heritage Park. The Village Store will be open nightly, featuring Village cheese, maple syrup, and fresh-baked bread from the Village Bakery. Photos with Santa will also be offered on select evenings. Outdoor skating provides a fun way to warm up. Unwind on site over your favourite beer or wine at Cook's Tavern, or enjoy festive dining at the Harvest Barn and at the nearby Upper Canadian Cookhouse.
