Celebration of Canadian Music

Special all day programming will bring to life a fantastic variety of 19th-century song, dance and instrumental music. Tune in to music performed, consumed and composed in pre-confederation Canada, take part in an old-fashioned singing school and try your hand (and feet!) at a 19th century dance.

Experience a 19th-century crash-course in choral singing, accompanied by a unique 1860s Canadian-made reed organ.

10:30 AM – 10:50 AM: Les Chansons Populaires du Canada
Pastor’s Home Front Porch
Explore Ernest Gagnon’s 1865 collection of traditional songs.

11:00 AM – 12:00 PM: DJ White and “The Rise Up Traditional Singers and Dancers”
Harvest Barn Pavilion
Learn and participate in these great presentations offered twice daily.

11:00 AM – 11:20 AM: Square Pianos and Parlour Performance
Cook’s Tavern Upstairs Ballroom
Encounter early compositions from Canada and the sounds of an 1860s Canadian-made piano-forte.

11:30 AM – 11:50 AM: Follow the Fiddle!

Trace violin tunes and techniques as they travel across territory and time in this workshop-concert.

12:00 PM – 12:30 PM: Introduction to the Concertina

Listen to and learn about members of the 19th-century accordion family.

1:00 PM – 2:00 PM: DJ White and “The Rise Up Traditional Singers and Dancers”

Cook’s Tavern Front Steps
Witness this world-renowned ensemble as they offer a modest sample of popular music from the past.

1:30 PM – 2:00 PM: Hurdy-Gurdies and Musettes
Providence Chapel
Featuring guest performers Alison Gowan and Éric Pichette, join the hurdy-gurdy (vielle à roue) on its journey from Medieval Europe to modern-day Canada. Enjoy French and Québecois traditional music through the sounds of flutes and bagpipes.

2:00 PM – 3:00 PM: Musical Items from the UCV Collection
Crysler Hall
Check out some of the interesting (and odd!) musical instruments from the Upper Canada Village collection of historical artifacts.

2:30 PM – 3:30 PM: Brass Band Concert

Crysler Hall Front Yard
Soak in the sounds of seven saxhorns playing arrangements of pre-confederation Canadian compositions and 19th-century brass band music.

3:45 PM – 4:45 PM: Ross Farm Concert & Dance
Ross Farm
Featuring guest performers Alison Gowan and Éric Pichette, conclude the day with a concert and dance. Enjoy traditional Canadian and European songs sung in Occitan and French, and try your feet at fine folk dances.
