Hands on History Program

Hands on History offers an engaging, interactive exploration of 19th century life at Upper Canada Village. Led by a member of our education team, this program invites students to learn by doing, through a series of hands on activities and games inspired by the 1860s. Your group will take part in three activity blocks, which include 19th-century group games, hands-on heritage craft, and 1866 in fashion & historic play.

Black History Education Program 

How can we learn about the challenges, life, and accomplishments of the local Black community in the 1860s? Through a new Education program, offered during Black History Month in February, where participants explore the lives of Black community members in 19th century Upper Canada.

Students engage critical thinking skills used by historians as they are led through interactive primary source research activities and games to uncover the untold stories of 19th century Black community members, their legacies, and their contributions to our local community. Please note that this program can be tailored to different age groups.

Black History Exhibit Program 

How can we find out about the challenges, life and accomplishments of the local Black community in Upper Canada in the 1860’s? Through a guided tour, quizzes and activities, students uncover the untold stories of 19th century Black community members and discuss their legacy and contributions. Students are also introduced to the history of Black Canadians, from colonization to the 1960s. Aligned with multiple aspects of the Ontario curriculum.

Battle of Crysler’s Farm Education Program

What was the Battle of Crysler’s Farm and how is it connected to the War of 1812? In this program, engaging and knowledgeable staff provide an interactive program that explores the people, reasons, and consequences of this pivotal battle. Through exploring art, maps, videos, and displays, students delve into the history of the Battle of Crysler’s Farm. Included is a visit to the top of the Battle of Crysler's Farm Monument to see the submerged site of the battle and compare the landscape to the one the soldiers would have experienced. Aligned with multiple aspects of the Ontario curriculum.

Self-Guided Discovery Visits

A visit to Upper Canada Village provides a field study opportunity for students to gather information and formulate questions and compare their lives with life in the 1800s. Students will interact with costumed interpreters to learn about the role of women, men, and children, and how they dealt with challenges like food, shelter, clothing, work, and transportation. Historical trades, horticulture, livestock farming and land use will also be explored. Horse-drawn boat and wagon rides include.

Train Ride

Hop on the Miniature Train for a fun and educational ride through Crysler Park. Listen to the bilingual commentary and learn about the important role of the railroad and the St. Lawrence River.

Live-In Adventures (Day & Overnight)

The Live-In Adventure is a day or overnight immersive opportunity to experience everyday life in the 19th century. Students are outfitted with authentic period clothes and introduced to integrated learning activities. These activities could include domestic tasks, such as, sewing and cooking; or trade shop experiences, such as, woodworking or blacksmithing; and farm chores, such as wood sawing and gardening. They will also attend a one room school house. A Teacher’s Guide with menu suggestions, evening activities and pre-trip/post-trip ideas is included.

Parking & Buses



Free Parking Available 

Plenty of space for cars and buses. 



Bus Parking Guidelines 

Tour buses should park at the back of the lot. Please avoid idling to help with environmental conservation.



Warm Days Exception

On hot days, buses may idle for up to 10 minutes at the end of the tour to cool down before re-boarding.
